"THE SOUL BROTHER WITH A PLAN"
By Dana Rettig
The term soul does not just come from performing in front of millions of people, and accomplishing many musical accolades for the world to observe and love. Soul is a term derived from one's mind, vision, heart, and lastly, spirit that encourages others to “get into the groove of things”. If someone spends ample amount of time in putting their vision into work for the greater good, that person has determination. If someone works diligently to give others the vital tools they need to succeed as well as themselves, that person has wisdom. If an individual knows that quiet strength and humility goes a long way in life (especially when you are in the music industry), that person has resilience. And last but not least, if an individual displays their gift from God and is not afraid to show to the world all this while inspiring their audience to reach their dreams despite the dreadful circumstances that life has bestowed upon them; that person has soul. Everything that the person does for the community and beyond truly comes from the soul.
Rhythm-and-blues singer and songwriter, Raheem DeVaughn knows all about utilizing his gifts for the greater good as well as showing love, compassion and dedication to women who make daily sacrifices for their friends and loved ones. Raheem DeVaughn's most recent album was an album dedicated to strong, intelligent, beautifully made women who utilize their inner-beauty and strength to eliminate negativity in their lives in addition to spreading love and knowledge
to others so the community won't crumble based on daily negative images that are being bestowed upon women every day. “Queen is part two to 'Woman', a song from the previous album. My album, “Love, Sex and Passion” is one of the most sexual albums I have ever done. Artists such as Boney James and Trombone Shorty are featured on the album. It's full of slow jams that I think people can relate to,” he said. So... what is the difference between love, sex and passion? “Love comes from deep within. Love without passion equals vacancy (emptiness). Consequently, sex plays a big part in the factor, too. Truthfully, I think the best sex is beyond the bedroom; it comes from how a person thinks and acts sans the extra attention. And lastly, passion comes from being determined enough to own what is rightfully yours. In my line of work, you have to 'own' your spot- or else you'll be indicted.” (Laughs) I own something that no one can ever take away from me: my drive.
Although the world's favorite soul singer may know how to croon his way to a woman's heart with sensual, delightful lyrics; there is one thing that not too many people know about him and that is…“I don't know how to read and write music like most professional artists do. I go off ear and take it from there but that's perfectly fine with me. Everyone has their own thing and I have mine,” he declared with a pause and then returns to the conversation. “Back in the day, I used to work with one of D.C.'s greatest producers, Chucky Thompson. He's worked with Biggie Smalls, Mary J. Blige and Faith Evans. Even though I was not around to actually observe these talented people doing their thing, I have heard many great stories about [them] and their wonderful musicianship which inspired me enough to get out there and do my thing.”
When an artist takes a break from the music business, they find ways to utilize their time properly before returning to the music diversion with a vengeance. Some write cook books just for the heck of it. Some artists create flashy handbags for women who need more room for their endless clothing and make-up supplies. Yet, other artists like Raheem DeVaughn establish non-profit organizations that help the younger generation to follow their dreams in addition to maintaining another hustle on the side just so the person can keep up with monthly payments.
“At the time, I had to leave the music scene alone for a while until my heart and mind gave me the okay to return and give it all that I have. Therefore, radio became my alternate plan because it helped define me,” he explained. “Still, in the midst of my hiatus; I have sought enough time to establish a non-profit organization called The Love life Foundation. It has been established for a couple of years now and the reason I established this organization is because I wanted to give back to the community and that I genuinely care about people.”
Since passing the torch to artists on the rise, Raheem does not regret taking time off from the music business. In fact, taking a break from music was what he needed in order to return to the game stronger than before. “There is a lot of great talent in the music business. Yet the three things that make me standout from other artists is my ambition, hustle and keeping abreast of what's happening.” Raheem may be a singer with incredible vocal range, but he is a man-nonetheless. “The difference between Raheem the singer and Raheem the man is not all that different, if you ask me. I love women. I care about people. I am a parent and just like every other artist; I am basically a normal person,” he concluded.
